AUX-04 Pre-Class Assignments

Assignment One

You're to visit your Flotilla, Division, and District web sites and examine those sites as a critic.

Evaluate both the positives and negatives of each web site.  What do you like?  What do you dislike?  If the web site was under your control, what would you change?  What would you add that is not there?  Does the web site provide a service to the unit, the public, or both.

Write these down and bring it to class.

Assignment Two

You need to obtain images, graphics, photos, clip art, etc. and compile them on a CD or USB Key (thumb drive) for use in the course.  Bring it to class and you can use it as you build your web pages.  There will be a CD provided as part of the course that will have generic Coast Guard and Auxiliary Graphics, so you should concentrate on images specific to your Flotilla, Division, and/or District.

If you do not have the ability to burn a CD or don't have a USB Key (thumb drive), then you can use the CD supplied at class or obtain what you need online.

Assignment Three

Online CS Officer's Guide

The New CS Guide is now online.  You will be using this guide during the web development portion of the AUX-04 class as a reference and will also have a post-class assignment involving the CS Guide.  We recommend you download a copy of this guide and keep it on your home computer and if possible, add it to the CD of files you created in Assignment Two.  Remember to check the Guide's version number often because being a living document, the information can change or be updated by the author.

You should access and read the briefing paper which provides an Introduction to the Communication Services Officer’s Guide (CS Guide). You will find it provides background on this important tool, describes its contents that you should be aware of. After reading the paper and visiting the linked document you should have a feel for the information available on this site and how this new resource will help support your efforts in use of e-tools and auxiliary web site development.

After reading the briefing paper go to the guide and review its Table of Contents, all items (section titles) are hyperlinked--one of the beneficial feature of the Adobe Acrobat format.  To access the CS Guide Briefing Paper and the new CS Guide click on the following resource links.

Assignment Four

You will be learning to use Microsoft PowerPoint software to create presentations for use in your Auxiliary efforts.  In order to be able to get the most from the class, you need to have with you a project to work on while at the Academy.

Think of the things that you are asked to do in your job in the Auxiliary:

  • Teach a Boating class
  • Teach a member training class
  • Do a booth at a boat show or a back-to-school night showing the Auxiliary

The above are examples of the types of PowerPoint presentations we will be teaching.

Bring to the class at least 2 ideas for presentations that you would like to work on while there.  Write down your ideas the way you might stand up and present it.  Consider bringing some digital photos if you have them.  Maybe some favorite clipart or possibly a favorite web site you want to reference in your slide show.  Your presentation can be on any subject you might be asked to do.  We will show you how you can use PowerPoint to make it easier and main table.

You will also be asked to complete a presentation after the class and submit it for review.

Looking forward to seeing you at the class.

Assignment Five

Visiting the AUX-04 Student Support Site

Hopefully by now you've visited the AUX-04 Student Support website at http://aux04.auxservices.org/ to check out information you need to know as an AUX-04 resident student.

Make sure you've filled out both the Student Questionnaire and Travel Forms.  You'll also find needed information about travel and lodging requirements

Also make sure you click on the 'Students' button and read the student's page and its linked pages.  On the left of each page you'll find links to information under 'Administration', 'AUX-04 Documents' and 'Other Resources'.  Browse around...and if you have any comments, send them to the webmaster (link at the bottom of each page).
